At approximately 11:00 AM on July 19th, Stephan Coney was transported to Superior Court GA5 in Derby, CT and served with an arrest warrant charging him with the following: Assault in the 1st degree, Reckless Endangerment in the 1st degree and Threatening in the 2nd degree. These charges stem from the May 19th stabbing on Hawkins Street. The court imposed an additional $75,000.00 bond for these charges.  Coney has a court date of July 20th at Superior Court GA5 in Derby, CT.

The Derby Police Department is investigating an assault which occurred in the early morning hours of July 8, 2010.  At approximately 12:55 A.M., the Derby Police Department was dispatched to the parking lot of Over the Hill Tavern, located at 131 Hawkins Street in Derby, on a report of a male bleeding in the parking lot.  The victim, a 19 year old male who was not a patron of the bar, was found to be stabbed several times.  He was treated on-scene and transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.  The police are following up on leads and ask that anyone with information please contact Investigator Massetti of the Detective Bureau at 203-619-1908.

On FRI JUL 9, 2010 at approximately 9:00pm, the Derby Police Department made an arrest in connection to the stabbing on Hawkins Street, which occurred on JUL 8, 2010.   Stephan Coney (D.O.B. 4/7/1991) of 46 Atwater Avenue 2nd floor in Derby, CT was taken into custody pursuant to an arrest warrant charging him with Assault in the first degree, Reckless Endangerment in the first degree and Threatening in the second degree.  Coney is held on a $75,000.00 bond and scheduled to appear in court on JUL 20th.   He was taken into custody without incident outside his residence at the aforementioned address.  At this time, Coney remains the only suspect in the assault.  He is also a suspect in the MAY 19th  stabbing on Hawkins Street for which the Derby Police Department expects charges to be filed soon.

The police department recently received a report of a scam where a resident was contacted via telephone by a "friend" in the UK who had been involved in an automobile accident and was in need of money. This person was requesting that the money be wired to an account in the UK. The detective division is investigating this incident. Residents should be aware that similar scams have been in existence for years and that they should never wire money to anyone without first validating who the person is and confirming where the money is going. Many of these scams occur over the internet, telephone and even via standard mail. Most of these scams originate from Eastern Europe or Nigeria. Click here for

The police department received a complaint that the Frank P. Witek memorial had been vandalized. Several stones were pulled from the foundation and left in the area. The memorial is located at Witek Park on Academy Hill Road in Derby. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the police department at 203-735-7811
